Why Twitter Will Win: The Quality of the Community

This morning (on my last day of classes, woohoo!) I was struggling to write a new blog post - writer’s block if you will. Rather than laboring through a brainstorming session I decided to ask my friends on Twitter:

Asking my friends on Twitter a question

Within minutes I was receiving a flood of responses:

My friends on Twitter inspired me. While reading through the suggestions I thought to myself how great all of the ideas were, and how hopeful my followers were. Rather than write about their suggestions today (I will in the future) I want to emphasize how wonderful the Twitter community is. The people who are currently use Twitter are friendly and intelligent. The people who use Twitter are “ahead of the game.” The people who use Twitter are legitimately interested in learning, not only about technology, but about other people.

So to everyone who uses Twitter, thank you - thank you to everyone who is following me, and an extra thank you to all of you who helped me with my writer’s block!

I think it’s definitely Twitter’s biggest advantage, and I think that ability to respond so quickly is what provides a greater sense of community. Other sites, even when adding/removing friends, don’t provide that communication. Actually, another thought for your writer’s block (…or perhaps for mine), the importance of developing more effective back and forth communication in social networking.

AJ, I think you are on the right track in regards to Twitter. This is just one example of many I have seen on Twitter within the last couple of weeks. I think that it is a great tool for fast polling of public opinion on a subject. I do have one fear, is this technology scalable? In scalable, I don’t mean the hardware, I am talking about the users. Is a user that has a million followers going to be able to navigate the responses. Yes you can easily navigate the 11 responses above from your ~1100 followers but would you still be as happy if you got over 1000 responses? There will be a natural limit to the amount of followers one can have before it sucks up too much of the user’s time just reading the responses. Is Twitter headed from “what are you doing?” social network site to merely another “human opinion search engine”? Either way it will continue to be a useful tool but I think we will see some evolution of Twitter as it becomes more popular.

I really like @fogofeternity’s suggestion. “Why X social media site will fail” I just started reading your blog and following you on Twitter. Glad I found it!
