Twitter Feature Request: Email Notifications For Lost Followers

Shocking announcement

Twitter isn’t perfect. Alright, maybe it’s not so shocking, but I felt as if it was something I needed to say since I am always praising Twitter. The good always comes with the bad, so here is a feature I think Twitter is missing and can easily implement.

Email Notifications for lost followers

When someone stops following me I feel as if I may have let that person down. When someone follows you on Twitter they expect a certain amount of value. When someone stops following you on Twitter that most likely means that you did not provide the proper amount of value. I personally would love if Twitter provided us the option to receive emails when we lost followers. Every time I lose a follower I would either direct message or email that person just to send them my regards.

What do you think?

Do you think this would be a valuable feature? Do you feel bad when someone stops following you?

Ya, it’s a good idea. I’d like to know. Although I also like to be able to quietly stop following without anyone noticing.
More importantly, can we just have some organization around how we see our friends and followers? Alphabetically would be nice.

I am so glad to know that they don’t get an email. I just stopped following someone because they twittered a lot about things that weren’t interesting me and only occasionally about things that did. I didn’t want her feelings hurt!

    Where do I get it?

I disagree. You’re seeing Twitter as a business and social marketing tool, and that’s fine for you and others like you. The majority of Twitter users are not “power users” or whatever it’s being called. Most are connected to friends and a few others who they like to follow. While you might just send a friendly DM if someone unfollows, some people might take it personally and get mad. I could see this possibly if there was also an option where you could prevent people from seeing if you unfollow them, but that would kind of defeat the purpose.

I’ve got to agree with Alex on thiis.

While I do see and understand where you’re coming from, I think notifications will change the dynamic. It’ll make the average person worried to unfollow for fear of offending as well.

Dont’ really see a need for it.

Yes, I think this would be a very useful feature, but there could be problems.

I don’t notice when people un follow me. For me Twitter is about what I get to read from others and the people that engage in conversations with me. The number of people that read my tweets is really not relevant at this point.

I also un follow people quite often, the last thing I would want is people messaging me on why. The reason is always the same, they tweeted too much about stuff I didn’t care about. Doesn’t mean it isn’t important, it just didn’t fit with my twitter goal.

I would suggest that if you want feedback on your tweeting habits. Write a blog post and ask your followers to reply. @jowyang did that and worked well for him.
