I’ve Been Tumbling Lately

Blogging can be tough and time consuming. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy blogging, it’s just that sometimes it is hard to find a focus and a form of consistency. I want everything I post on this blog to be worth reading and to be of a certain quality. Personally, I feel that my blog design and setup (read: Wordpress) kind of creates this sort of through process.
After my brother Gary made the switch to Tumblr last week, I decided to give Tumblr another go. I tried it out a long time ago, and came to the conclusion that Wordpress was still the best blogging platform for me. Well after a few days of using Tumblr, I have found that Tumblr has kind of recreated my love for blogging. I think it has to do with the flexibility of the platform and the community behind it.
So for now, most of my “blogging” will be taking place on my tumblr account. I am thinking about making a complete switch over to Tumblr, where I will mix long-form blog posts with the quick links, videos, and photos I have been posting lately.
What do you think? Are you a Tumblr user? Pros, Cons?

I would recommend keeping your professional blog separate from your tumblr blog. I’m not saying that tumblr is not a powerful blog engine but from what I can tell ajvaynerchuk.com has tons of informative and insightful blog posts, this is a website URL you should be putting on your resume. Whereas your tumblog is reserved for “cats with lasers”, “this is what i had for lunch” or even “who says basketball is not a contact sport” :p. If you are to move over to tumblr I suggest having two tumblogs, one for this and one for that.

I love tumblr but right now it still feels very much in the hack it together stage. I think it works perfectly as a collection point for things you find online but if you want to focus putting unique content out there you may want to keep that on Wordpress.
Main reasons: ownership (assuming this is your own install/hosting), ease of exporting data (your content isn’t locked down to one platform), plugins (wp has a great community around it making it better everyday), google juice (plugins and wordpress features just make it easier for search engines to share your content)
I use tumblr to reblog my favorite items on the web and highlight items I have posted myself. There is no reason not to do both as long as you can set limits on them so they stay unique and fresh.
