Why Alexa Ranking Doesn't Matter
Ranking high on Alexa seems to be a priority for many webmasters of today. In reality, Alexa Ranking is purely a fictional placement of your website compared to the rest of the Internet. The rankings are meaningless since they are typically inaccurate and in reality do not truly represent where your website ranks among the rest.
An Example of Why Alexa Ranking Doesn't Matter
For this example, I am taking two websites that I own and operate. Website A garners about 10,000 unique visitors daily. Website B garners about 2,000 unique visitors daily. Here is the fun part: Website A ranks 120,000 on Alexa while Website B ranks 75,000.
Why Alexa Ranking Does Matter
A good Alexa Ranking can play a role in advertisement sales. If the individual purchasing advertising on your website cares about Alexa Ranking, then Alexa Rankings are important. Obviously the higher your website ranks on Alexa, the more the buyer will value an advertisement on your website. Since webmasters are typically in this business to make money, it is important to cover all of your bases when selling advertisements - thus Alexa Ranking is important.
An Example of Why Alexa Ranking Does Matter
A few months ago I was selling text links on a pair of social network resource sites I own. After providing traffic details for both websites, the buyer decided to only buy a link on one of the websites - the one with less traffic but a higher overall Alexa. Even though the advertisement would reach less people, the buyer decided that the website with less traffic was more valuable purely based on Alexa.
What You Should Do
The last thing I worry about when building websites is the Alexa Ranking. Typically Alexa Rankings come with traffic, and traffic will never come without quality content and marketing. If you create quality content and market your website appropriately then a desirable Alexa Ranking should follow. If you have already created quality content and marketed your site properly, and you feel as if your Alexa Rankings are too low, there are a variety of ways to game (cheat) Alexa Rankings. Since I do not support cheating when it comes to Internet Business, I will not go into that in this article.
Conclusion
Alexa Rankings are a fun little thing to look into, but irrelevant in the big picture. Focus on content and marketing and Alexa Rankings should follow. Remember, Alexa Rankings isn't important in reality, but when it comes to selling an advertisement or your website, it can play a major role.
